- a stretch of 100 kms. From Ramnagar till Banbasa the road will be generally
isolated with good paved stretches to drive on. On both sides of the road are
Farm houses of the Terai region. Till 1960 this area used to be covered with
dense forest of Sal & Teak wood. From Banbasa till the border town of Mahendernagar,
the road condition is not as good as before. At the Indo-Nepal border check
in with the Nepalese government officials.
The road we now drive on is almost identical to the stretch in the Indian
Terai region. We will find a lot of similarities in the lifestyle and language
of the people as well. Proceed ahead to Shuklapat in the western region of
Nepal. There is the Sukla Phanta Wildlife Park here which is still not fully
commercialised, thus giving full satisfaction of wilderness. Sukla Phanta
is situated in the extreme south west of Nepal and is home to some of the
most endangered animals like the hispid hare and pygmy hog. The swamp deer
or barasingha can also be
spotted. Their large herds (hundreds at times) stand out as a dark brown patch
in the distance. The herds of males are a delightful sight, for their antlers
make forked projections into the sky a photographer's dream during
sunset. Overnight at Hotel Sweet Dreams in Mahindernagar.

the Churia Hills with their dry sal forests to the porous slopes of the Bhabar
and its tall grasslands. During spring, the forest is abloom with the scarlet
flowers of the red silk cotton tree

Day 7 : Royal Bardia - Royal Chitwan National park. Nepal, for its small
area has a surprisingly large number of National Parks. While the high Himalayas
makes up the northern region, the Southern lowland known as the Terai is covered
with dense tropical jungles teeming with diverse wildlife and tropical birds.
Our stop tonight will be at Island Jungle Resort in Royal Chitwan National Park.
Day 8 : Chitwan

The
Royal Chitwan National Park is Nepal's first National Park, built in 1973 during
King Birendras rule. The massive expanse of 932 square kilometres of wild
forest plays host to 43 species of animals and over 450 species of birds including
the majestic Tiger. On one side it has the hilly Shivalik Range with its deciduous
Sal forests while a fifth of the forest is made up of the flood plains of the
Narayani, Rapti and Reu river, with tall elephant grass interspersed with riverine
foliage of Kapok (silk cotton), Acacia and Sisam. On the other hand there are
the swampy areas and a number of ox-bow lakes, which are home for marsh crocodiles.
And finally along a stretch of the Narayani river are found the highly endangered
gharial or Gangetic crocodile. The Gainda or the Greater One Horned Rhinoceros
is one of the largest, most venerated animals, said to be endowed with magical
powers according to local people. Unfortunately, this belief has led to the
fast decrease in its number and conservationists are now looking at all possible
ways of saving yet another animal from becoming extinct. Earlier there was a
gainda gasti that acted as a Rhino Patrol Guard but today, protection
is in the hands of the Royal Nepal Army. Overnight at The Island Jungle Resort.
Day 9 : Chitwan - Pokhara.
Our drive today takes us from the Terai region to the Shivalik region - our
aim is to reach Pokhara situated in the middle of Nepal. The valley is at
an altitude of 884 m and the Annapurna mountains rise from the plains of the
valley. Pokhara is decidedly famous for its mountain views especially the
148 Kms of mountain horizon stretching from Dhaulagiri to Himalchuli. Its
beauty is enhanced by the lovely lakes Phewa, Begnas and Rupa. Overnight at
Hotel Shangrila.
Day 10 : Pokhara.
If you want the right balance between adventure and relaxing then Pokhara
is the place for you. It is a small town in comparison to many of India's
cities. Yet, it is one of the largest in Nepal with a population of 95,000.
Once a trade route extending between India and Tibet, it is today a base for
many of the treks in this area. Overnight at Hotel Shangrila.
Day 11 : Pokhara - Kathmandu.

Pokhara
is 200 kilometres from Kathmandu. The route meanders along with the Trishuli
River till Bairini and then dips southward to Kathmandu, the Capital of Nepal.
Kathmandu is the largest city of Nepal with a cultural bounty that enraptures
even those not quite cued into art & architecture. The Durbar Square in
the city is a pot pourrie of temples and stupas, flanking the narrow cobbled
streets and open courtyards. A testimony to changing times, these ancient masterpieces
contrast against the modern Japanese cars and other International products that
lie interspersed within the compound. At no time do you find the Square empty
of its curious onlookers, idle squatters, vendors and of course the famous hippies
of Kathmandu. In fact one of the temples has even been nicknamed , the
hippie temple, as earlier it was a common meeting point for smoking marijuana,
which was only recently banned in the country. A once- upon- a- time haven for
the flower children of the 60s, Freak Street is the other famous area
running alongside Durbar Square. Overnight at Hotel Shangrila.
Day 12 : At Leisure Kathmandu.
Anyone, who has visited Kathmandu, will recommend the three masterpieces
Bouddhnath, Pashupatinath and Swayambhunath three musts
while planning out one's itinerary. These beautiful monuments are a testimony
to the deep religious and spiritual life that belonged to the past and it
is not surprising that UNESCO has nominated these three structures as World
Heritage Sites. One can only hope and pray that the world recognizes their
worth for centuries to come for it is doubtful that their brilliance can ever
be surpassed. Overnight at Hotel Shangrila.
Day 13 : Drive to Dhulikhel and Bhaktapur along the Arniko Raj Marg.
Dhulikhel is a lovely town, 30 Kms east of Kathmandu, famous for its scenic
beauty and old tradition. From here one can have a complete panoramic view of
the Himalayas from east to West. Overnight at Hotel Shangrila.
Day 14 : Transfer to airport to connect flight to New Delhi. Assistance
on arrival to connect onward international flight.
